An ingenious solution to food waste in Lagos.
Food waste is a global problem and even though more of us are doing what we can to reduce this awful habit, it needs global momentum to fight this problem. In Africa particularly, it is a growing issue: with 45 % of food going to waste in developing countries. And the main cause is lack of refrigeration especially in the huge food markets that dominate African cities.
And in 2015 Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, a radio presenter and social entrepreneur, tackled this problem with an ingenious and forward thinking plan to introduce “Cold Hubs” – an enterprise that could transform millions of lives and the entire Nigerian economy.
Walk-in, solar-powered cold stations for 24/7 storage and preservation
Coldhubs offers farmers with a flexible pay-as-you-store subscription model. In preparation for storage, farmers transfer their perishable foods into our reusable crates, which fit neatly onto the shelves. Farmers pay a daily flat fee for each crate of food they store. And in an extraordinary statistic Coldhubs can extend the shelf life of perishable food from 2 days to 21, reducing post harvest loss by 80%.
